The
Twelve Cellists of the
Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra
The 12 Cellists of the Cardiff Philharmonic
Orchestra was formed in 2005, the impetus coming from the famous 12 Cellists of
the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The number of performers is fluid, much like
the Berlin Phil group - there are sometimes fewer, and sometimes more!
As a non-professional organisation, the group contains an
extraordinary range of talents, including an optometrist, an
immunologist, a psychiatrist, a German teacher, a triathlete, an accountant, an
Open University student, an Associated Board examiner, a civil servant, an
acoustic engineer, a law student, a historian, a junior doctor and several
music teachers. This same list includes a conductor, some singers, a viola
player, several pianists, a bassoonist, a French horn player, a clarinettist,
and a glockenspiel player! The 12 Cellists first Music Director, Martin May,
who ensured the ensemble's success throughout its first season, will be
succeeded in the Autumn of 2006 by Claire Frankcom.
The ensemble's extensive repertoire is designed to mirror the
very different personalities of its players and to afford interest, variety
and, above all, entertainment to themselves and their audiences. Performances
have included lunchtime recitals at the University Hospital of Wales Cardiff in
October 2005 and Cardiff's newest arts venue,The Gate, in February 2006. The
ensemble presented programmes of Christmas music at The Capitol Centre and
Queen's Arcade, Cardiff in December 2005.
The ensemble's most recent performances have been at
St Mary's Church, Port Talbot and in the beautiful Forest of Dean village of
English Bicknor.
In August 2006 the ensemble made its debut at the Wales Millennium Centre.
